The Non-Quilt Blog Post

Okay, I've done several quilty posts so now I feel free to write one that's completely off topic.

First off, a close-up of Lily making herself at home right where I don't want her. At least I'd moved a lot of stuff so she didn't knock everything down when she jumped up.

I'm doing well, the cats are doing well, the husband is travelling. I'm taking advantage of the latter and eating things like popcorn and nachos for dinner. Not at the same time.

I've avidly searched for news of the fate of Pushing Daisies. Please, ABC, please don't cancel this show. I wouldn't mind if they didn't make any more for this season - they've already made 13 episodes. That's fine, lots of my favorite shows have short seasons, not the 20-something episodes of the traditional networks. Just renew Pushing Daisies for fall 2009. Please, please, pretty please.

Bryan Fuller, the creator of Pushing Daisies, has stated that he might go back to Heroes if the show is cancelled. Can't say I'm excited about that. I love superheroes, but the first season of Heroes was only good, not great. I figured it was the backstory of how everyone got their powers and that's why it occasionally DRAGGED and after that the show would really click. But from the rather bad things I've heard, not the case... So I might catch more Heroes someday, but not going out of my way to see it.

Finished watching the final season of The Wire. There are shows that I love more, that I enjoy more, but I'd still vote The Wire as THE best overall, consistent tv show ever made. Every episode is fantastic, the writing and acting amazing and the story heartbreaking. Not a single bad episode in the lot and I can't say that about any other show. (Well, unless you count Fawlty Towers which only had 12 episodes.) Shows you how broken the Emmy system is since this show never got the love it deserved.

Interesting blog post here about what Barack Obama could learn from watching The Wire.

Finished watching season 6 of The Shield, another excellent cop show, though more melodramatic than The Wire.

I watched the first few episodes of Chuck, which I'd never intended to try. But I read a review that praised its sheer entertainment value so I gave it a shot. It's about a 20-something guy who isn't living up to his potential, working in the Nerd Herd at Buy More (hmm, wonder what that could be a reference to) who gets government secrets downloaded into his brain. I was afraid he'd all of a sudden be a perfect spy but it doesn't work like that--he gets flashes of insight but is still himself.

So definitely goofy fun. Nothing to take seriously. Kinda Aliasy, but not that kickass. Much better than Jake 2.0 which it vaguely resembles, but with a lot more humor and fun.

Tried Life about the cop who was wrongly sent to jail but is out now etc. It stars Damian Lewis who I loved in Band of Brothers. I hated the show. Didn't expect that at all, but totally hated it and couldn't even watch all the episodes on the disc. Just immediately set my teeth on edge.

I'm officially giving up on Smallville about Clark Kent and how he learns to be Superman. That show just lost it after the kids graduated high school. I kept plugging away with it because I do think Tom Welling does a wonderful job as Clark and I loved the relationship with the Luthors. But watched the first disc of season 7 with Supergirl and I just can't take it anymore.

Tried watching Sweeney Todd with Johnny Depp and hated that one too. It was the singing and music I just couldn't stand. Give me rock opera anytime, but obviously not this stuff. Speaking of rock opera, Repo! the Genetic Opera sounds intriguing. Doesn't look good, just like it might be fun to watch on a double-bill with Rocky Horror Picture Show. And hey, that's Giles (Anthony Steward Head) starring - that's gotta be worth something.

I watched the new Masterpiece Theater version of Northanger Abbey. It was cute and fun but definitely Young Adult section Jane Austen.

Okay, that's all for now. Catch ya later.

One thing I would suggest for beginners in this type of piecing is to use fabrics that look the same on both sides, such as quilter's cotton (Kona is a bit coarse and frays more easily). That way, they don't have to concentrate on right side/wrong side issues and rip out the piece they got on backwards. Batiks and handpaints work this way too, but are more expensive for a beginner.

I like Chuck too,k but oddly, haven't been watching it since I've been able to actually get network TV. Have you heard of Life on Mars? It's interesting. Cop from the present somehow wakes up in 1973, but occasionally gets glimpses of the present or even future (micro robots) and is trying to figure out what is going on. Stars Michael Imperioli as a the perfect seventies smarmy guy, and Harvey Keitel as exactly the kind of character you'd expect from Harvey Keitel.

Popcorn & nachos? Really? That's EXACTLY what I live on when my hubby is traveling. The cat photo is absolutely gorgeous. Have you thought of making a pictorial quilt from it?

Popcorn for dinner is my kind of meal! I finally got to see The Awful Truth and loved it! That one was hard to find but was finally on the cable free movies On Demand here. Did you ever see My Favorite Wife-has both Cary Grant and Irene Dunn it it as well. I just love Cary Grant! I have never see Pushing Daisies, but I guess I should check that one out sometime. Although I do have the habit of liking shows they take off the air without giving them a chance. Enjoy your popcorn and nachos-

How can you live outside the US and know more about TV shows than I do? Just added the first season of The Wire to my Netflix, thanks.

DH and I think we may have stumbled on a reason Pushing Daisies isn't doing better. It's on opposite the new season of Bones (at least where we are). Couldn't figure out why we kept missing Bones this fall... and then actually looked at a TV guide one day. duh!

Loved Fawlty Towers, and I enjoy anything Jane Austen.

Pretty picture of Lily...
I couldn't watch Sweeney Todd either...The music drove us batting! My Dh struggles with anything where they are sitting having a serious conversation and then break into song...he managed Chicago but even that was a push for him.

Heh. We own the complete Fawlty Towers -- on VHS tape.....

Have you tried Jericho? It's about a community that must try to survive after a major terrorist nuclear attack. I didn't watch at first -- wasn't interested in yet another cut-rate piece of hysteria -- but I gave it a chance after I read some blog buzz about it.

Turns out Jericho contains genuine acting, an actual plot with characters that are not cut out of cardboard. There are realistic moral dilemmas that would arise post-apocalypse, and each character gets to express a legitimate point of view about them.

In other words: riveting. Naturally, it was cancelled.

SO glad to hear that you feast on popcorn and nachos when your husband is away ~ those are my standard "go-to" meals when DH is on the road! Does ice cream factor anywhere into your "on my own" diet?!?!?

I am watching Smallville season 7 right now. I didn't like Kara at first, but she's okay now. I am on disc 4. But Lana, I've always HATED!!!! She's a terrible actress and only has one look for every emotion. Blech. Louis is kick ass and I could look at the Green Arrow shirtless, all day!! I just watched the first two episodes of True Blood on HBO. It's fricking fantastic!! Like Twilight, except much better and for adults. I think you would like it.

I'm going to give Chuck a try tonight, I just recently heard good things about it too. This weekend flipping channels I found a movie I highly recommend "A Song For Bobby Long" a John Travolta movie I had never heard of.. I have been dying to tell someone beings you brought up the subject, it is you. lol.

Repo!??? That one I'm not so sure of. Now, I loved "Dr. Horrible's Sing-along Blog", and I gather there's going to be a sequel. Have you ever seen "Dead Like Me", or "Eureka"?

Your quite the tv buff! The only tv shows I've been so hooked on were, Jericho, ( I still can't believe its over!(wiping a tear...) And Deadwood. But I'm a sucker for any western. I've seen just about everyone...ever.
As for sweeney todd, one, its a musical I loath, and two, its a musical...oh. for tv, my husband watches every cop/detective show. mostly british and everything american... I have to say it. I do like MONK and PSYCH. there is said it.
gotta go watch LA Ink now...

How neat. I love the Life, loved Sweeney Todd saw it as soon as it was out in the movies. Thanks for the list. I did watch all of the wire but I was tired of it by the end. I enjoy reading both your post types. Quilt or not.

Kudos on a blog. I hope to come back when time allows but right now I'm in the midst of my first quilt--a football-themed one for my first grandson. Only the birth of a baby could bring me to quilting although my granny and mother when she retired were talented quilters of the more traditional variety.

I'm kind of doing my first project seat of the pants style. It will definitely be a one of the kind.

And I love the show Chuck. Lots of fun.
