Pokey

My sweetie Pokey has acute kidney failure. She's at the animal hospital now, but not really sure what they're going to be able to do for her. I've barely been able to stop crying.

  19. I'm sooo sorry about Pokey, Tonya. My kitty, Trudy, has chronic kidney failure ... we found out last year when she was about 7 years old. We don't really know how long she will live, or when she'll have a health crisis. It's soo hard, and I know you feel helpless. I hope the vets can find a way to make Pokey healthy again. She looks so sweet! We'll be thinking of you.

  26. I, too, am sorry to hear this news. I am hoping if the reason for it is high blood pressure, they can get Pokey on BP meds and that would help. If the diagnosis came quickly (which it seems that it did) and they can determine what has caused it, there are things that can be done to treat it and I will hope this is the case for your sweet kitty.

  96. I'm so sorry to hear this. Sadly, kidney failure is a common problem in older cats and sometimes younger ones too. Subcutaneous fluids should help her. When our Ella was 7 she was diagnosed with failing kidneys. We gave her fluids a 2-3 times a week - it's really not hard to do. We eventually were able to cut down on the fluids per week and after 2 years she has actually recovered and we stopped the fluids all together. I pray that Pokey will have the same response and recover.

  136. I am so sorry to hear this. I had the same diagnosis with my Babe. When the vet looked at her numbers they were sky high. He gave me the impression that it was just a matter of time. He kept her over night and gave her IV fluids and her numbers came up just a little bit. He showed me how to give her Sub-q fluids 3 times a week. That was back in Oct. 2008. She responded incredibly well. She gained weight and is doing fine. Please ask if this is an option you can try. It can't hurt.
