Bitty Bit of Hope

The vet just called. Pokey is doing a bit better. Her kidneys are functioning more than they were, whatever infection she had has now cleared up. More blood tests this afternoon and an ultrasound of her kidneys. She ate voluntarily last night and is keeping her head upright more (rather than hanging it straight down). She's even moving around the cage. This is all good news, but I'm afraid to hope too much. But I am all the same. She's my sunshine.

I visited Pokey yesterday. They brought her out to the examining room, with an IV tube still stuck in her leg. She looked better than she had the day before (but since that was absolutely terrible...). Unfortunately she was just scared the whole visit - all those noises and dogs at the vets - she just wanted to escape and curl up in a corner. So I decided not to visit again. Too hard on her. But I just wish I could hold her and see the improvement myself.

Thank you all for the kind messages and thoughts. We're all hanging in there, including my husband who is so far away right now. I think it's hardest on him. I'm at least here with the rest of the cats to give me love. They're not quite sure what is going on. Treat time is different now. Pokey is the ringleader and just begs for those treats. A couple of hours ahead of treat time she starts sitting and staring at me, alternating with jumping into my lap. My poor baby.

You poor thing! I love your little Pokey. She reminds me of my grandpa's sweet calico barn cat, the one I loved so much when I was a child.

I'm holding all of you in the light, as the Quakers say.

Really really pleased to read she's still with us and you're all hanging in there. I've been worried sick!

I'm glad things are looking brighter. I believe if Pokey wasn't a LOT better, she'd not even notice OR care about the noise at the vet's office. I predict she'll be home soon (on a special diet for cats with kidney issues) and life can return to a more normal routine for you and the other kitties!

Thank you for the update. I was hoping for positive news on Pokey this morning. I think the fact that she is eating voluntarily is a GREAT sign and I agree with Pat that if she weren't feeling better, she wouldn't care about the noise, etc.

You and Pokey, and your husband, will continue to be in my thoughts and prayers.

Hope Pokey feels better soon...in the meantime, if you can't visit her (I know, it's very hard, I've been there too) can you leave a piece of your (unwashed) clothing with her to comfort her?

I'm so glad there's a bit of improvement. I've prayed for the both of you. My little female Missy got sick about 4 years ago and the hardest thing for her was staying at the Vets. All the noises and smells, she was petrified. I know it's hard for you not seeing her but it's better to let her rest until she gets better. I appreciate you letting us know how she is doing. I always love looking at her pictures, those beautiful blue eyes.

My thoughts are with you both.

Thanks so much for the update, Tonya. I've been thinking of you and Pokey so much the last few days. I've been where you are now, so I understand some of what you're going through. Sounds like she is making some improvements, so maybe all those prayers and purrs are working! Will continue same! Shade and Dunkel send more purrs and head butts to little Pokey. ((hugs!))

That's good news Tonya! When my kitty was diagnosed with kidney disease, the hardest thing was to get her to start eating and drinking on her own again. Once she did that she bounced back very quickly. She is on a low-protein diet and drinks and pees a lot, but other than that she is healthy and happy ... Best wishes from me and Trudy (cat).

Tonya,
It's so good to hear Pokey's doing a bit better. Eating is a big improvement! Here's hoping she'll get to come home soon. Thanks for taking the time to let us know how she's doing. Veterinary medicine has come a long way in a few short years.

Tonya,
You need to visit with her in a private room. Honestly...she will get better sooner with you to encourage her.
When my kitty was very ill and in the ER for animals, they had me come in to help while they changed IV's and stuff. It settled her and then she would eat for me...not for them! I ended up getting to take her home much earlier as they could tell she needed me as much as I needed her. And she recovered.
My prayers are still coming your way.
XOXOXO Subee

I feel so bad. I looked at Pokey's picture from the last post and didn't read the words. I didn't know he was sick. Not that I don't love your quilting, but I pop in everyday just to see the cats. I have a 14 year old ginger tabby tom and he loves Pokey's pictures too. I just have to believe that everything will be fine. He has a wonderful home, with family that knows how to love cats to look forward to. Keep us posted.
Love,
Caitty and Rusty

Why not take a T shirt you have worn, or your pillow case ( unwashed) for her to lay on at the hospital. It will give her the comforting smells of home, without the confusion of seeing you and then you leaving her. Just a thought, but I did it when my dog was sick, and the tech said he kept his head on the T shirt the whole time.

Poppy Q said...

Sorry to hear about your sweet girl. You should keep visiting, I bet she loves your touch and your voice.

Mum had a cat puss angel who went through the same thing, and the vet would let mum hold her even with all the drips in.

You will know when the time is right for your girl, she will let you know.

You are in our thoughts.

Teri and her Stylish Adventure Cats said...

We came to your blog via Millies blog because we saw you needs purrayers. Our Teri is a vet tech and she knows how worried you must be. And how hard not to visit is. She is happy she works at an all cat hospital with no barking dogs! She said you could take in some old wash cloths that you have rubbed all over you and some that you rubbed on the other kitties and they can put those in her cage and the scent will help calm her and make her happy.

Hope she improves each day and can come home soon. Don't be afraid if you have to give fluids under the skin at home too. Teri did that with her beloved Bo for 5 years, every day and they had lots of extra years to love each other because of that.
