More wonderful blocks for the Bah Humbug! quilt:
From the top down, we have these wonderfully scrappy tropical feeling blocks from Beth, the humming hum, tiny bahs and wonderful sheep fabric (bahhhhhh) from Sandra, and Jen's wild bah and bug at the bottom.
Jen's practically been snowed in where she lives and meanwhile it's supposed to hit 90 here today. Remind me in July and August that I really do love living in Florida. Especially since the painters finished and took all the stinking plastic down and I could open windows, hurrah. Good thing because I was starting to get claustrophobic.
Yesterday I did two demos and some show and tell at the JaM Patch. I brought a variety of blocks to illustrate all the different directions you could take UnRuly Letters.
I think it went well. I actually felt relaxed and confident (what a difference from 6 months ago!). It helps that these were small groups and I wasn't up on a stage with a microphone. (eek. But I think I can do that too.) This was my first time ever sitting at a table signing books. Hmm, I must be an author after all. hee hee hee.
Is anybody reading this who was at the demos yesterday? I'd love to have you say hello in the comments. Actually, I'd love to hear from all (okay any of) the lurkers. Just say hello, maybe tell a bit about yourself.
You know why I'm thinking about that? Because I discovered a fabulous blog recently that I totally love reading. I went back and read through all the archives. Turns out she'd been lurking on my blog but never said hello. I only found her because I googled my name (that's embarrassing to admit).
The blog is Completely Cauchy by Chawne. I want to give you a warning before you go visit. She's fabulous, she's funny, and she's uncensored. If you are offended by seeing profanity written out, don't go. Otherwise check out her great word quilt featuring George Carlin's Seven Dirty Words You Can't Say on TV. I love the quilt, I really do.
To hear the George Carlin riff, there's a good version of it here. I admit to using some of those words quite freely and using one of those words never. It makes me cringe and I don't even like looking at it. But it does make me think of my favorite joke on Arrested Development about Gob wanting to buy a boat called the Seaward, which you can see here. I just rewatched that four times - always makes me giggle.
Alright, I really am supposed to be getting chores done today.
Obligatory kitty photo:
ya'all take care
Congratulations on your presentation. I hope you're getting used to it. I see many more in your future. Great, funny blog. Seeing that George Carlin quilt made me laugh, such a beautiful little thing, and then you read the words!
ReplyDeleteI don't know what I'd do with a quilt covered with those seven words because those words are not a part of my speaking vocabulary, however I like the colors of the quilt and the forms of the letters. I guess I'm just an old-fashioned prude!
ReplyDeleteOh boy, I had to check out her blog and you are so right. Hilarious. I try hard not to use those words but I sure love that quilt. Very meaningful.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on getting out and walking and doing demos! You'll be a traveling teacher in no time!
ReplyDeleteThat blog post is hilarious. I just love her photography, color sense and the projects she makes. I'll add it to my blog list!
Hi! So happy you had fun! And, Yes, You are an author, a very very talented one!
ReplyDeleteAm still laughing, I enjoy the blog and the quilt!
When you have collected all the bah!humbug blocks will you be able to cover the entire state of Florida?;-) Actually each is more beautiful that the others. What fun. Bonnie
ReplyDeleteI didn't know you had a singer FW. How much do you use it? I like mine when I get it out, but at home I haven't used it much.
ReplyDeleteI immediately went to Completely Cauchy. She is hilarious. It reminds me of when I was teaching. When the kids said a bad word we would say don't say "shit". Haven't I told you not to say "shit". The kids would think it was so funny to hear the teacher saying forbidden words.
ReplyDeleteWhat an amazing job!!!! I love the quilt. I can see Mr. Kitty is ready for his blanky!!!
ReplyDeleteHi! I've commented before, but not for a while. I am currently working on the eagles from the Lindy Quilt. I don't know if I told you before or not. I mentioned it in a comment to Bonnie Hunter and she said that the quilt is in your book. I saw it made up with the pilot's call letters (words) by someone in Oregon a couple years ago, and since 2 of my sons are pilots, I wanted to make one like it. I'm going to make the reduced size quilt with 10 eagles and 10 planes with the words going around the edges. I don't know when I'll get to doing the words - it will be after I get all the blocks done. I have 2 1/2 more eagles to embroider and then will start on the airplanes. I'll be looking for your book.
ReplyDeleteVery nice!!!
ReplyDeleteMuy lindo!!!
I just love the idea of your word quilts. I am going to make one but I gotta mull it over in my brain for a while.
ReplyDeletethanks for the awesome inspiration and new idea to add to my life!
You need to rub that baby's belly for me! Just love those blue eyes!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the shout-out, Tonya! I really am a shy quiet nerd, but somehow your letters have given me a way to express myself. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteLove Chawne's quilt.
ReplyDeleteHope the knee's are ok.
Don't know if I've ever commented before, but I've been lurking here for a long time. Got your book for Christmas, but haven't tried any letters yet. Glad you had good presentations!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing Clawne's blog. I laughed out loud, as I've been known to use some of those words myself. Loved George.
Wow! After seeing you chairbound, with electrodes hooked up, I'm amazed you can get out and about and do a presentation! The therapies must be working, or you are getting cabin fever!
ReplyDeleteI loved the George Carlin inspired quilting...I miss him!
In stitches,
Teresa :o)
I can see my big BABY block in the middle of that top on the table :0)...
ReplyDeleteLoved the George Carlin quilt......he was really a bit crazy :0), the hippy dippy weatherman...remember that routine?
Happy Sewing,
Kim
I enjoy your blog and love the idea of word quilts. If you need help with using a microphone let me tell you what helped me: playing Rock Band with my kids! I'm not a very good singer (just ask them!) but it got me used to holding a mic so now I feel like a pro! Keep up the great work!
ReplyDeleteLisa
Congratulations!! I love it when people share their craft!! I see many more demos in your future.
ReplyDeleteCome to my guild!!! :-)
ReplyDeleteNice to hear I am not the only one addicted to fabric, aren't we living in a great fabric age? Too tempting! I too love sewing and quilting, hard to decide what to do next. Love your blog! Pokey is so cute! I have six fur "babies", they are attracted to me sewing and trying to quilt. Never planned that many, people dropped them off and they were starving so they ended up in my house. Congratulations on the classes. Cynthia
ReplyDeleteSo glad to hear your demos went well! I went to four quilt shops while I was traveling last weekend and found your book in two of the shops. Every time I see your book I just get so excited for you!!!! I love the George Carlin tribute quilt. If I had made that quilt I'm not sure I would be able to show it to my mom ;)
ReplyDeleteI love completely cauchy too! and the red quilts!! And my goodness Pokey is a handsome blue-eyed devil!
ReplyDeleteyour obligatory kitty photos are the best!! :D
ReplyDeleteYes, I love Kitty photos! Love the blue eyes!!
