Growing

Playing with my 4-Letter blocks. Don't these look awesome? I was noticing that there are three different ways here to make capital G's. The elongated L under other letters is popular - I love how it looks but I've never tried it. So much fun to see what ya'all come up with. And there are more blocks to come - woohoo!!!

I love working on a collaborative quilt like this. I'd be more than happy to make a block for anyone else who wanted to do this. Maybe a swap or a group who'd be willing to do blocks for others too? If there's interest maybe someone would be willing to organize it. Someone who isn't organizationally challenged (like me). Whoever the blocks are for could pick the word(s), sizes, colors or whatever. Just like I did with the halloween noises and then with this one.

Is anyone out there a beginning quilter who's tried the letters? Besides the daring Belinda whom I've already harassed on this topic. If you'd be willing to tell me about your experience and answer some questions I'd love it if you'd send me an email (listed in my profile).

Alright, I have to stop goofing off and get to work on my to-do list. sigh. Wish I could play all day like little Pokey. Play and sleep.

This is Pokey's new toy. It was supposed to be a feathery thing at the end of the wand, but the wand broke 10 minutes after I got it home. Still, this bit of it has been a big hit.

  1. Oh how fun to see my word in there!
I like your idea of a "word exchange" I also have organizational
difficulties or I would jump right in and volunteer. But I would like to participate if someone can figure out how to do it :0).

Okay now back to work for both of us!
    Happy Sewing

  2. Oh Wow...these 4 letter words are going to make a great quilt. I'm amazed at the variety of colors used. I need you to email me your address so I can get you my word...pretty p-l-e-a-s-e....

  3. The letter "G", whether upper or lower case is one of the most complex characters in typography. The variations are many. So many so,it is almost seemingly endless. Even if you are just writing the letter out in cursive (upper case), it is an unusual character.

I think your idea of a swap sounds great! I hope someone jumps on the idea.

Your wand story reminds me of a toy I bought for my Mother's dog when he was about a year old. He tore it to shreds before she even made it home from my house (laughing). Pokey must've been trying to figure out exactly what his "pet human" had given him! (giggle) Love the picture of Pokey with the wand! That bewildered look is priceless!

  4. This will be the happiest quilt ever. It's just pieces and I already love it. The word swap is a great idea, but I am over-committed and will not, no, no, no, will not volunteer to coordinate it. But I hope someone else does. :)

    Hi,
I am just getting back into quilting. I had not done any piecing for about 30 years. I am doing "Care" and "Scream." I know I will learn a great deal from this project. I love group quilts. Its so great to see what everyone is doing.

  7. like Cheri, I love the word swap idea but...I too have too much else going on to step up...you can not imagine how hard it is for me to say that! terrific to see all the word blocks I made play with the others-you will have some fabulous quilts from everyone's contributions-unique and wonderful - just like all the quilters who sent them.

ah, Pokey...some toys end up being played with differently than we imagined...enjoy your day!

  9. Hi Ton,

I'm not sure what you've got in mind re the swap, but if anyone wants to join the Yahoo! Liberated Quilters group, where we have a lot of people wanting to learn, I'm sure we can arrange something. We are up to 92 members now so a swap would be another great idea of getting the "youngsters" to play.

    URL is http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Libquilters/join.

  10. One of the best things about this quilt is looking at how other quilters do things. I just adore the word SNUG, for example, the lower case "a" in cake, and the "S" in sing is also quite different from your directions, and just wonderful, too.

I may very well take you up on a swap block a bit later this year! I've been seeing all kinds of wonderful wonky houses everywhere, and I am getting tempted...

Tonya, I love the 4 letter word quilt. It's fabulous. I'm just a little jealous. I love that everyone's fonts are a little different, just like in handwriting. I have my "boo" block done and I'd like to send it to you. Could you e-mail me your address? My e-mail is kayak_cliff@yahoo.com
I'd like to send you the mistake one I made as an example of not thinking ahead. You will see what I mean. Thanks for all you do. I have been stumped on how to finish a quilt I started as a swap 8 years ago and then as I laid down yesterday it came to me-- words across the top!
I am anxious to finish it now that I have an idea!

  13. These words all look great together! I'd like to be involved in a word swap...but you know you don't want me to try and organize anything right now!

  14. Your blocks look like so much fun. I have heard of you on some other blogs so had to come see what's going on! Looks interesting....but not sure I would know where to begin...I will read on and see if you tell!

  16. Such fun!! I love this idea. A totally awesome idea for a quilt just hit me like a ton of bricks. Anywho, I used to host swaps for scrapbooking all the time, so I am pretty adept at putting these together, in fact I may even have directions lying around somewhere that may fit depending on the type of swap done.

I think it would be the most fun to do a "give one, get one" swap. Where we pick a theme of sorts, say like your four letter swap or even the Halloween theme or Fourth of July or Christmas, and this would apply for everyone rather than having individual choices. Then basically everyone makes as many blocks as they want to fit the theme, they can even make multiples of the same block depending on the number of participants, they mail to the swap hostess, and they get back the same number they sent in all mixed up from the other participants. This is a lot of fun, because it's a big surprise as to what you get back! And it makes it so someone who wants to make 20 blocks and someone that only wants to make 10 can participate in the same swap!

Anyway, if you want me to hostess, I would be happy to, just send me an email athenagwis at. hotmail .dot. com

    Rachel
