Holiday Desserts

We’ve had cold weather and glorious sunshine for several days and I love it. My sweetie and I walked down on Christmas Day to see the holiday windows at the big department stores. Other people had the same idea but this is deserted compared to the usual mob. Before Christmas this entire sidewalk would have been packed and you’d have had to walk out in the street.

This year we tried the French seasonal treat of a Bûche de Noël. Interesting to have tried it, but I won’t need to have another ever.

More holiday treats – these photos were taken on my trip to Leeuwarden in the Netherlands.

My husband is enjoying his time off. Yesterday we went to our favorite Italian restaurant for lunch and then watched the Alfred Hitchcock film Notorious starring Cary Grant and Ingrid Bergman. A fabulous movie finally out on DVD again – woohoo!

  1. Those sweets are just spectacular to look at, but the only dessert I find truly tempting is ice cream. Sorry you didn't like the buche de noel, which I enjoyed. I like the idea of it, so one year I made one, but it's so not worth the effort.

  2. Fabulous desserts! I would love a taste of each one. They look very rich so I would imagine a taste is all I could handle.

  3. Notorious one of my favourite Cary Grant and Alfred Hitchcock films...known for one of the longest on screen kisses at the time! The acting is superb!

  5. Great desserts! I LOVE Notorious! We are all big Hitchcock fans. Have you ever seen Dial "M" for Murder with Grace Kelly? Netflix has a huge selection of classics... some of which you can watch online.

  6. It's hard to beat European pastries, esp the presentation. Your fabrics in the last post are even more delicious looking than these pastries!

  7. I would so love to get up to London to look at the Christmas windows, Selfridges and Harrods in particular are always spectacular. Perhaps next year. I've made Christmas logs in the past, but find that amount of chocolate butter cream rather too rich. They look pretty though.

  8. oh, don't those look so tempting and mouth-watering. What a beautiful city to stroll along and enjoy the window sights. Glad you had a lovely time

  9. Everything looks delicious! We made a Buche de Noel once and it was quite an undertaking. I love the taste though. Ryan likes to make a Winter Solstice cake, but this year we didn't get to do it and now that Chloe can't eat it would just be cruel to make one. It will have to wait a couple of months!

  10. The sweets where you are look so good! I think I'd have to get a new wardrobe every few days if I was living in Europe!

  11. ooh! I'm so done with holiday treats! We have to many around here... But they look so nice!
We just watched Romeo & Juliet (1968 Franco Zeffirelli) for a holiday movie treat... Fun!

  12. We just organized DH's DVD collection...I wanted to do them by theme but he wanted to alphabetize them. How boring. The treats all look wonderful. One of my favorite scenes this christmas was at our local bakery. They had rows and rows of beautiful cupcakes. A little boy came in and just squealed - he wanted the spiderman one. His poor mother. She tried hard to change his mind "look at the cute snowman...the santa." No luck. Spidey for Christmas it was.

What works of art--too pretty to eat. And oh, how I love the Paris pictures...

  14. Oh Wow...it's a treat just to get to look at all the 'art work' in these bakeries!! YUM and YUK at the same time!!

  15. The traditional buche's make me feel sick. This year I got one from the supermarket which was very light and not yuk making.

    I missed Wallace and Gromit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  16. Tonya, you just cracked me up with your comment about the cake. We have a joke in our family about saying that something tastes "interesting"....just like you said, "don't need to have another ever". I really enjoy all the pictures that you post from Paris and will miss them when you come back to the states. But, we need more people here like you, so it's a good thing.

  17. I love all of your sweets pictures...but I think that I need to post again, so that my blog is not associated with the mangroomer for much longer. :)

  19. Oh my. Those certainly beat the selection at the local supermarket -- fifteen different variations on the unimaginative theme of white paste icing and neon frosting.
