In the two and a half weeks since I posed the question "would you buy Gwen Marston's Liberated Quiltmaking for approximately $36" ya'all spoke up and said you'd buy 235 copies. I think that's pretty swell given the short amount of time and no involvement by the author. I passed the information along to AQS. The editor thanked me and asked how many of you would want to buy Liberated Quiltmaking on CD.
Hmm, I can't get excited about that at all. I do enough reading on the internet as it is. And LQ isn't a book that you'd just bring up to get a pattern, because there aren't any. It's a book to be read and savored. But I relay the question nontheless
Would you buy Liberated Quiltmaking on CD?
I'm with you, its the book I want not something else to read at the PC.
ReplyDeleterather have it in book form.
ReplyDeletea cd for patterns is ok, but this book needs to be in book form in mho.
Kathie
CDs are fine in their place, but don't compare to a book for reference in my opinion (for what is worth !)
ReplyDeleteThat's my oppinion too, and it's the feel and smell of a book, that keeps me sitting in my comfy chair and dreaming of the next project inspired by a good book.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't buy a CD that needs another tool to be in contact with me, I want to hold it with my very own hands and take it whereever I want to work an dream with it.
Maybe I'm oldfashioned, but there's nothing like the book.
Lots of greetings
Tine
I can't see me 'listening' to LQ with my morning cuppa, or listening to it in bed, or just mulling over the pages.
ReplyDeleteNo - definitely paper, gorgeous photos and that lovely cover. LSQ on order - wooo hoooo!
I echo Tine's thoughts completely.
ReplyDeleteFeel the same way..I don't drool over CD's and and don't take them to my neighbour quilting friend and say: look! On the other hand: if that's the only way i can get a copy of the book (probably cheaper for the publisher to make a cd than republish a book)then I"d buy the cd.
ReplyDeleteSorry, no. I'm with the majority.
ReplyDeleteI like to have it in book form. I want to be able to read it in bed at night when I can't sleep!
ReplyDeleteI can't make notes on a CD.
ReplyDeleteI can't read it in a chair with a cat on my lap.
I can't read it in the car.
I can't put it near me on the worktable in the sewing room as easily.
I can't read it when I'm sitting outside on the porch.
I can't read it in bed.
Besides, I have bifocals, and reading on the computer is a pain in the patootie.
I want it in book form.
I'd jump at the CD form faster then the book itself actually... I love the idea as it is so much more versatile for me... The sections I want printed for some reason could be printed. If I suddenly decided I wanted a hard copy I could print it all and bind it... Its much easier to store, faster to search, and otherwise just more versatile I think as an electronic file.
ReplyDeleteThe best format in my opinion would actually be an EBook rather then a CD -- Allowing people to download it and print it -- or sections of it (if they want a print copy) or leave it on their machine for those that want an electronic copy!
I like books. Maybe a CD of the basic instructions tucked inside the book??
ReplyDeletei'd rather the book, and i don't think i would buy a cd if it was my only option.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure if I'd buy it as a CD, as others already have said, I'm browsing a lot on the internet, my work is to use PC's, so..I want to have something to read in a chair, in my bed etc.
ReplyDeleteI am too old-fashioned for a CD. I could live with a CD accompaniment but not the whole book. ~ksp
ReplyDeleteI'd rather buy the book
ReplyDeleteI want the book - not the CD.
ReplyDeleteI sense AQPS is trying to save on printing costs....
ReplyDeleteThey should take a look at Amazon's self-publishing service. AQPS provides the electronic file and individual copies are printed and mailed as they are ordered -- no upfront printing costs.
Also, they could make the book available on Kindle, for those who don't mind an e-book in exchange for a lower cost.
I would never by the CD. I am the poster child for computer use but still prefer the book everytime.
ReplyDeletesigh...you'd think a book publisher wold GET it.
ReplyDeleteI spend too much time using the computer already...
ReplyDeleteWould I buy ANY book on CD? Absolutely not! Too bad the author can't use any of the zillion "publish on demand" services where she can publish a print run of 100, 2000, or 147 but it is obvious the publisher has her locked in. I'm really feeling like this publisher needs to get a dang clue! It's obvious this book won't end up in the remainder bin like so many other quilt books.
ReplyDeleteBook for me too!.....Hey, thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment.....and to think....I did it all bra-less!!!!!
ReplyDeleteDo you mean it would be an audio book or a pdf file I could print on my own? I would settle for a file I could print on my own, but I don't really see the point of buying this in audio form.
ReplyDeleteI think I would pass on the CD. I love to shlep books to soccer practice/on vacation/car trips. Places I usually dont' pull out even the laptop. I put my bzyqltr letters on my blog header! They look great, but I need a less fuzzy picture. Will try to update that today. Fun fun fun!
ReplyDeleteI might buy the CD if that is the only way to get the information but I would love the book. CDs just don't give me the same pleasure that a book does.
ReplyDeleteif the only way to get is CD, I'd buy it but there is nothing like having the book to hold in your hands. AQS should know we need to TOUCH stuff! we are fabric fondlers you know!
ReplyDeleteWhat has happened to the state of publishing that they are even considering a CD option for Liberated Quiltmaking? Quilting is a HANDS ON activity, as was reading at one time. Give me a book to page through, scribble in, dog ear, and keep by my side as I experiment with Gwen's techniques. Call me old fashioned, but I don't even understand how a book on CD would work! I hope you'll be sharing these comments in their entirety with AQS (or put them all on CD for them to read in the comfort of their computer cubicles).
ReplyDeleteAnother vote for the book. This isn't a case where the CD would add anything to the experience. Let's keep our fingers crossed that they'll bow to the majority opinion!
ReplyDeleteOh boy. What is with that publisher?? It has to be a BOOK, not an e-copy of one. I have to smell it, feel it, curl up with it, jam it in my tote bag, make notes in it, and have it on my table with all the fabrics for inspiration. I want a BOOK, thankyouverymuch! But, if the only way to get a copy is on CD, I will grudgingly buy one and then print it out and get it bound. I love some of these comments from people. I see we are of a kind. Quilters are tactile people, and quilts and books are tactile experiences. It's nice to know I'm not alone!
ReplyDeleteBOOK, DEFINATELY!
ReplyDeleteBook please...
ReplyDeleteUnless Gwen is going to read us the book and give us her lovely instructions in person on the CD I vote for the Book!
Wow, I thought I would be in the minority, but I find that everyone else seems to feel the same way I do! I would not want a CD, much prefer to have a book!! Now if they wanted to include a DVD with a slideshow of lots of quilts as bonus, that would be a totally different thing!!
ReplyDeleteBook definately, as with others, I love to READ!!!!
ReplyDeleteThe computer has it's place in my life but will never replace a good book.
A cd isn't like a well loved book, you can't get it dog-eared and it won't just fall open to your favorite places...
lol I love my books to pieces. With a CD you can't bookmark your spot with small pieces of fabric that you may have in mind for a certain patterns.
Nope!!!!Nope, No CD for me! Book please!
Smiles Fran
Interesting question but no, probably not just because I am no more computer literate than just blogging. Everything else on the computer just gives me frustrations.
ReplyDeleteI'd prefer a book, but yes, I'd buy it on a cd if that's the only way I can get hold of a copy.
ReplyDeleteWhile Quilt Pixie made some excellent arguments for the book on CD, I guess I'm too old school, I want a book I can hold in my hands, hopefully with photos.
ReplyDeleteOh, no CD. I want the book! I won't buy a CD.
ReplyDeleteNo CD
ReplyDeleteHave the book, so I know for a fact THIS book would NEVER work in a CD format. It would be like taking the Mona Lisa and putting it into braille. What 'sense' would it make in that format? Feeling this book is about other senses then eyes. It's all about her thought processes even more than photos and its more of a classic you NEED to own, not one you go to for referencing. You 'feel' how Gwen evolved through the processing, page by page, of this book. You can't feel without touching as one of your senses when it comes to sensing another's heart!
ReplyDeletebook
ReplyDeleteI already have them, but want it in BOOK form. Love holding them, sliding my fingers over glossy pages, taking one with me on a trip, etc.
ReplyDeleteBook! CD: no way.
ReplyDeleteBook for me, please!
ReplyDeleteNo, no, no! Say it isn't so!
ReplyDeleteBook for me, pretty please.
Hi, yes I am 236 for the book, but not a CD....can't fondle it enough!
ReplyDeleteI am having such a fabulous catch up with you today, i am on my 2nd coffee, just at you!
I am very excited about your book...and would help but I think distance excludes me.
The plaid one you are working on looks great, a bit different from your usual.
I was really intersted to hear you liked burn notice, it appeared here in the low rating season, we got about 8 episodes and it went off promising to "be back later in the year". I absolutely loved it, thought it was extremely well done, I hope they actually bring it back..but this is from a country who wont even bring back ER!.have you seen a second series?
The Closer has just appeared back for Season 2, enjoying that as well,
keep up the good work, Tracey
No I would not.
ReplyDeleteAnother no vote for the CD. I'm with you, can't drool over a CD. Thx again for being our advocate at AQS.
ReplyDeleteyou summed it up-what would be the point? I love my copy and it lives on my nightstand -now a dvd of Gwen demo'ing and talking about how she gets inspired to make "a" quilt..whole nother matter.
ReplyDeleteIn response to CHER, at one time, Gwen had a series of instructional video tapes on some of her liberated techniques: houses, log cabins, stars, folk art applique. While it was fun seeing Gwen in her element and felt almost like a personal mini workshop, the tapes could not substitute for the book!
ReplyDeletePrefer a book.
ReplyDeleteThe book before a CD.
ReplyDeleteHope this response isn't too late, I'd rather have the book. CD holds NO appeal for me.
