Spotty Border?

Yesterday I had such a wonderful day. I sewed in the morning and then went out for a 3-hour photo safari. Most of those photos will get deleted (I love digital) but still need to do a lot of sorting.

Here's Pokey stealing my seat:

This is what I'm thinking of doing with the Margarita Quilt. I bought this spotty fabric because I LOVE it and thought it would be fun for a lap quilt. Instead it might end up here, with a yellow inner border first:

I'm not sure if it's too busy but I do know it's much more exciting than the quieter border I was initially auditioning. Hmm, although now that I look at the blue border I have to say it's calling to me as well. It does make the quilt dark though, and I wanted it more Florida brights....

This is a close-up, just so you can see it, but I would definitely use the yellow, rather than the orange:

Yeah, this one might still be saved for the lap quilt. I talked myself out of it while doing this post. That blue border looked more Florida-y.

Okay, gorgeous day again (woohoo, I feel happy) so I need to get sewing and then figure out my next expedition.

  1. Love the busy border! The center is cheering rather than calming, so the border might as well continue the theme.

  2. Are we going for impact on the whole quilt, or just the centre? I'm inclined to go for the blue. It throws the centre out. The spots don't.

Good weather? Ha! I don't think you want to swap places. Boy is it wet! This isn't called the PĂ©rigord Vert for nothing :-)

  3. I think they are both fantastic. I would have to close my eyes and just grab one that way. I do love that pink border fabric though.

If you're going to border it in a solid fabric, I like the blue better. While I love that spotty fabric, I think the blue is more exciting and arresting with your blocks.

Ever thought of a pieced border, like a sawtooth?? (Running and ducking...)

  7. Ya think? I'm loving those spots... Blue a bit dark? Well, you're the expert and I bet it'll be great. No doubt about THAT! Enjoy your walk!

  8. from a Floridian, I think the blue looks great with the blocks, really lets the blocks make a statement. They seem to get a little lost in the spotty border.

  10. I'm guessing the blue bits in the pink fabric are not the same blue as your potential border fabric? How would it look to have an inner border of the blue and then the spots?

I am jealous of your beautiful weather. We've had nothing but various shades of gray since Saturday :-[ (Of course, that beats a cyclone or tornado any day.)

  11. I love the idea of a nine patch. I've always done larger applique quilts, but maybe now is the time for a nine patch. I have a lot of fabric (who doesn't?). Come have a look at my most recent creation

  12. I have enjoyed lurking on your site. My two cents...have you auditioned an aqua inner border with the spots fabric as an outer border? P

  13. I guess I'm every bit as opinionated as your other commenters, so here goes: I think the pink border detracts from the center. It's too busy and too dark. I prefer the blue one. More than prefer, I really like the blue one.

  15. I'll add my 2 cents too. I vote for the blue border. I think it makes the 9-patches stand out. (And it's the color of the ocean in Florida, isn't it?) I think the spotty border competes too much. Just my opinion. . . . I know you'll come up with something good!

  16. I like the spots! Are you making two of these quilts? I really liked the mini blocks in your previous post. What happened to them? You have so many great ideas I can't keep up with you!

  18. Still in love with the blue. It's stunning and picks up the blue in the blocks and makes them pop.

Oh, please pick blue! It is stunning, and really highlights the center work.

  20. I think you could live with the blue longer...does that make sense? Glad to hear the sun is shining there too. It makes such a difference!!!!

  21. While I have to agree that the border is busy, the small dimensions of the spots make it more textured in comparison with the rest of the quilt, and set it off perfectly. (Sorry, that sounds like I've just swallowed a dictionary!)
