Voila, Blooming Horrors

Blooming Horrors is finished at last. It measures 24.5" x 29.5"

The spiders and the year are stem stitched with perle cotton 8 or 3 strands of embroidery floss. The background spider webs and some of the quilting details were done with regular quilting thread.

I wove some perle cotton thread through my quilting stitch to get this interesting effect on the spiky flower:

What do you think? Is it out of balance? I'm wondering if it needs more down in the lower left corner.

It still hasn't gone up onto the wall yet. I'm behind on my Halloween decorating.

Two of my favorite people in the world, my aunt (who quilts) and uncle are arriving in just a couple of hours. Woohoo. Of course I've put off all sorts of cleaning and tidying because I work better with a deadline. I think that's NOW. You won't see much from me in the next 10 days. Take care and cross your fingers that the French don't get too strike crazy.

  1. Bonjour mon ami. C'est fantastique, comme d'habitude.

I don't think it does need anything in the left hand corner.

Enjoy the next 10 days. If the strike continues and Mr le President doesn't give in there is a good chance that you could have Paris to yourself for a few days!

  2. I've been following the progress of your blooming horrors with great anticipation of it's finish. It is just beautiful. I dont think it needs anything either, but if you did I have an idea that just might work nicely. My mum made a cushion for my daughter (she's a halloween baby) it's in purple and lime green and has a big black spider about the size of a dinner plate crawling on it. It has a black velvet body and head, eight black shiny beady eyes and furry black legs plaited from wool. This is stitched on top of a delicate shiny embroidered spiders web. The cushion has the words 'Come into my parlour said the spider to the - - - - ' and theres a button shaped fly trying to get away. It's very effective having a life like raised piece on a quilted subject like this.

  3. Lovely Tonya, I think something in the left corner would balance the whole quilt just a little bit more, something yellow I think! Wonderful result!!!

  4. I love it the way it is. I personally don't like things to be too symetrical. Enjoy your visit with your aunt and uncle. Hopefully the strikers will co-operate.

  5. Love the quilt! Have a great time with your visitors!

  6. My 2 cents -- leave the lower left corner alone. Rule of thumb is that an uneven number of objects is preferred. If you look at floral arrangements, you'll see odd numbers. (A dozen roses is the exception, of course!)

  7. WOW! I haven't been enthrawled during the making, but the quilting/embroidery really makes this an exciting piece. I just love the spiders in the moon :-)

I'd leave the bottom left alone -- I rather like the asymmetrical movement it has personally...

  17. Just fabulous how it is - asymmetrical wins every time.

  18. I like it just the way it is. I don't think it needs anything in that corner. It would make it too symmetrical. Things are more visually interesting when they aren't symmetrical.

  23. That is incredible. You're done, don't add anything. This could go in any art exhibit anywhere.

  24. Maybe just something sparkly in that lower left corner? You don't want to cover up the date afterall. Could you go over the quilted lines of the spider web with an iridescent thread or something?

Love the spiders on the moon! (Love the whole quilt!)

  40. Very very cool! Love it immensely! You do the BEST stem stitch, I can't do it, tired and tried but it always sucks. Oh well, I just backstitch everything.
