Bummed Out

I'm feeling a bit bummed out at the moment. The biopsy results came in for my knee and they show that I probably have the icky form of arthritis (Pigmented Villonodular Synovitis - PVNS), the kind that has to be surgically removed.

I wouldn't mind that so much (well, I'd still mind - now I have to have knee surgery again) except that means the docs are saying I don't have Ankylosing Spondylitis (A.S.), which I've whined to you before I'm absolutely convinced I have and want to treat. The reason they say I can't have both, is b/c each are exceedingly rare and so the odds of me having BOTH are almost zero. Like getting hit by lightening twice (tho my doc then admitted he knows someone who's gotten hit by lightening seven times...).

So not going to treat with meds. Gonna repeat some blood tests in a couple of months. From now on I'm going to obsessively keep track of the state of my health in a notebook so that I can have better proof of the A.S. flaring up. Drat, drat, drat.

While I'm in a whiny, complainy mood, let me just add how much I hate Cairo traffic. There are way too many cars on the roads, there are way too many cars on the road that shouldn't be on the road period, there are no emissions controls here and the car exhaust is just terrible, poor donkeys should not be pulling carts in city traffic, and families are not meant to ride motorbikes together.

The latter is not nearly as rare an occurence as it should be. Today I saw Mom on the back sitting sidesaddle holding the baby, Dad upfrom driving with a 3-yr-old sitting between his legs. The worst I've ever seen is five - with a kid crammed on the seat inbetween mom and dad. And it goes without saying that none of them are wearing helmets or any kind of protective clothing, not to mention flip-flops are not good motorcycle shoes.

Okay, got all that out of my system.

Tonight we have Lebanese food for dinner. I made a special trip to my favorite restaurant which happens to be right near my doctor. We'll probably watch some season 8 "Stargate SG-1" which will cheer me up, esp if Jack O'Neil is in it a whole lot. That character just makes me laugh, not to mention I have a crush on him. Not on Richard Dean Anderson (MacGyver did nothing for me) but on Jack. I do hate the fact that he's been promoted now - he can't get into nearly as much trouble. And, unless the episode is really exciting, I should be able to get some more quilting done.

Aloha Tonya.

I'm sorry you're upset about your knee. :(

I, too, liked Jack. I think they should have ended the show when his character was promoted. It's just not the same.

Too bad we can't sit and quilt together today. (Although I guess we can, we just won't be -right- next to each other.) ;)

The second book I bought with my own money was a coffee table book on King Tut. My husband traveled to Cairo when he was young and I still get him to talk about it.

It must be amazing to actually be there.

Take care and I hope you have a wonderful day.

Sorry for the news about your knee, Tonya. Your journaling about it may just help pin-point something that the doctors haven't noticed, as well as help you to cope.

Don't ever feel that you're whining...that's what friends are for...a shoulder to lean on when you need.

Can you tell us about the food over there sometime? Your life in Cairo is so fascinating to me!

Oh Tonya - so sorry to hear about the news about your knee. Hang in there, I think journaling it is a good thought. It sure can't hurt!

I"m just on for a few secs before I go and have my fun (root canal). I am not a happy camper right now! :)

Ouch! Sorry to hear the news about your knee - and, you are right to keep a journal to monitor your flares. I have found that you have to KEEP on the doctors about something you KNOW (or think you KNOW!). Seems funny to me that after a long while of themt telling you what it isn't, and then it turns out to be just that, how they seem surprised by the outcome. And yes, lightening does strike more than once oftentimes. Couldn't they just treat it, too?

sorry to hear the results weren't what you wonted ! I'll keep my fingers crossed that they are wrong.

Did you know I used to live in both Istanbul, Turkey as well as Manama, Bahrain? I bet we could trade terrifying traffic stories for hours!

Oh Ton...I'm sorry the knee is more complicated than you wished for! You have a right to whine! I can't imagine the traffic situation there...it's not near as bad in SC as it was in TX with open pickup beds full of farm hands from mexico....

Your fans have me SO in the mood to get back to quilting my 'best things are quilted' words quilt. I have been studying for finals....the last finals I'll ever have to take! YEAH! But my brain is so fried I can't even think of threading a needle right now, and that's my big whine. I wish I could put the world on hold for a week so I could sit and quilt and catch up on all the movies I want....that is my ultimate decadent day..while everyone else is gone to school or work, I just want to sit and watch movies and quilt ALL DAY!!

Catherine, you "win" with the washing machine. I hope it was at least a small machine, not a mongo American-sized one. The curry recipe on your website today looks excellent.

Thanks all ya'all for commiserating with me about the knee. It'll be better one of these days.
