Portrait of the Quilter

Portrait of the Quilter as a No-Longer-So-Young-But-Surely-Not-Middle-Aged Woman

I thought it was time to update the pic in my blog profile so I asked my husband to take some photos of me. You'd have thought I was asking him to walk on broken glass. He hates having his own photo taken and apparently it's also torture to take a photo of someone else.

Those are my new earrings I got for my birthday this weekend and I made the necklace years ago while I was living in Cairo. I've got different eyeglass frames from my previous photo and definitely more gray hair. But I like the smile in that older photograph - more me even though that's not quite what I look like anymore - so I'm not going to change photos in my profile.

I got some books for my birthday - woohoo. I did a good job selecting them if I don't say so myself. The only real celebrating we did was eat out for lunch every day of the long weekend. And yeah, okay I did have a couple of desserts.

Since I've been so lazy about posting I have a few links for you.

First off, make sure you're reading ComicBookLady's blog Quilt as Desired. Besides being a wonderful blogging friend, she's also recently attended Gwen Marston's Beaver Island Quilt Retreat and got permission to post loads of photos from the attendees. Here and here are the posts she's written so far, but I know there's more to come.

Loco Quilter Kimberly has put together a bunch of Halloween faces together for a very fun seasonal top. You can find my tutorial for piecing faces (specifically Frankenstein's Monster) here. And suggestions for making jack o'lanterns, and an alien, witch and mummy are here.

I've been doing a lot of reading. First off, the new Pendergast novel The Wheel of Darkness by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child. It was okay, but no great shakes. The books used to have eerie, creepy events happening that by the end could always be explained scientifically. Well, we've gone well beyond that now. Rationality out the window and I kinda miss it.

Stuart MacBride's latest (in paperback) novel Bloodshot about Aberdeen police detective Logan MacRae left a bad taste in my mouth. Just went too far at the end. I don't like feeling grimey from my reading and if this had been the first book I'd read by the author I wouldn't be reading any more. I did like the first two though, so I'll give him another chance. Oh, and the U.K. title of the book Broken Skin is MUCH better than the stupid title the U.S. publisher put on it.

Continue to love Ian Rankin's broken down Inspector Rebus. Naming of the Dead was an enjoyable read. Not a great memorable book, but well worth reading.

That's it for me. later...

A belated happy birthday Tonya. I must say I like the new photograph, you look happy and contemplative - a bit of a Mona Lisa look going on there!

I think I prefer the current photo. It does look like more "you". Hope you had a great weekend. How was the cassoulet?

Belated Happy Birthday Tonya!

Happy Birthday!!!I think the photo looks great but I like your smiley one too. It's always hard to find a pic of oneself that satisfies or projects the 'you' that you want.

Happy birthday. Both photos are nice. I have seldom seen one of myself that I like. You are lucky to have two to chose from.

Happy birthday, a bit late! I like the new photo but I agree that the smile on the old photo is great. You are wearing the most gorgeous blue in both of them, and it's a great color for you!

well tonya...i was so surprised to see a recent larger view of YOU. i have sat for a few moments and contemplated this new photo.....i think it's good! if you are middle-aged at 40 something....then i must be middle-aged "and more" at 50 something. it's a joke around here about all the ads and commercials that say..( for example )..."stop by and see our large selection of fabrics..threads...."and more"...unique antiques.."and more".....SO...i'm just like you..."AND MORE"!

I'm joining in on the chorus of happy birthdays! You're much braver than I am -- I haven't put my own photo up at all, just one of my quilts.

it is a common lament-getting a personal photo that you like of yourself and has all the qualities you want shown. I agree, the smile in the "older" photo is my favorite.
lovely earrings-blue is certainly a great color on and for you

I really like the new photo but I agree the other is probably "better" as a small profile pic for Blogger.

I especially like the contemplative wisdom that shows in the new photo ~ we earn this every day we live, and I'm glad you're willing to share yours with us!

I like Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child too. Don't even talk about gray hair. I say I earned every one from teaching in public school so long. Some of these hairs have names on them. Thanks for sending us over to ComicBookLady. we had a nice chat this am about the retreat.

Happy birthday from me, too. :-)
About the Preston/Child book? It was okay - I wasn't terribly disappointed that it was "out there" (though I just acquired Relic to see where it all began). What was more disappointing was that I had skipped the previous two books in the series and when I went back to fill in the blanks, I couldn't even get halfway through the first.

Maybe I'll try Ian Rankin next... thanks for the heads up.

Hey Tonya! Happy, Happy Birthday. I think the photo looks great, but do love that earlier smile. I do believe that blue is your color!

HI Tonya,
Tis the season for birthdays- my husband's was on Monday and my brother turns 50 tomorrow. I hope you have a grand year filled with good health, happiness and fun making lots of quilty things.
I think both pictures of you are lovely and the jewellry is beautiful. What lovely shades of blue. Do you play with beads too? I play a little bit with beads- mostly because I have a good friend who is a beautiful beader and it was something we could play together.
It doesn't matter how old one gets, one still needs to play.
Happy reading...
Regards,
Anna

Happy Birthday! And how nice to see a recent picture of yourself. You really don't show yourself all that much! Love your natural hair. Me too!

Happy Birthday Tonya! Sounds like a great weekend to me. I like the new pic - great earings :)
Thanks for the link back to Frankenstein's monster. I like the idea of using paper first. This should help me avoid future disasters!

I think you're very photogenic. Both pictures are awesome. I'm with Tanya in saying I like your natural hair. I go for natural, too.

A belated "Happy Birthday!" from me too! Thanks for the gargoyle pics; sorry it costs you physically. Now I have a bunch of links to check out! (Some free pieced inspiration may be just what I need right now.)

Happy Birthday. On my birthday this year the customs agent was the first one to wish me a Happy Birthday. lol Hubby was a little embarrassed that he didn't remember lol. And don't worry about white hairs, I was totally white at your age - it'll be fine.

Glad you had a good birthday, and having a dessert is all part of the fun!

Tonya, Happy Birthday, belated. I love both portraits of you, but I have an idea. Have someone photograph you from slightly above and off center. You will be happier with the results. Notice that is the exact angle your older picture was taken from. It will produce a better picture and smile your wonderful smile!

belated birthday greetings from me, hope it was great and I like the new, "thinking woman's" portrait!
The wonky jars are great! Tracey

Are you sure you are female. grow your hair long. That is an awful picture you must have such a trick mirror that you think you look good shouldn't you wait until Halloween to scare use. I guess you might fit in in France. Don't come to Orange Co. California.
No ugly people allowed.
