Hugs and Kisses

This is my quilt Hugs and Kisses, made just with Xs and Os. I actually hadn't intended it to look like this - I'd also made the words "I love you" and was planning on saying something else as well. I think. But when I put some of the Xs and Os together I was amazed at how graphic and pow they looked, so changed the direction I was going.

I made loads of them of varying sizes before starting to sew them together - and all of them didn't make it into the quilt. For this quilt I didn't add any extra background fabric to make any letter fit, I just whacked off anything that stuck out. I quilted fans around the border in black perle cotton and outlined each of the letters in varying colors of perle or floss. I shouldn't say outlined the letters. I quilted a bit in from the edge - through all the layers. I could do that using a huge needle - wouldn't want to try it with a baby quilting between needle.

WOW..WOW..WOW ! Love this quilt !
Liberated hugs and kisses, what a great idea ! I have been admiring your baptist fans on several quilts now..great job on those..so traditional and they add such dimention. Also delighted to see you use perle cotton. I know that utility (now they called it big stitch) quilting has been around for years and years, I've not seen many quilters use it. Friend Betsy and I probably own every color that it was ever made in. Even found some at Ben Franklin(in pumpkin orange) that no one wanted, on sale !! I took it all ! It works so well on scrappy quilts, and really great on flannel quilts. Plus I have the vision thing going, so less eye strain using that then the smaller thread and needle. Congrats on a really great piece, your hugs and kisses..how big is it?

Thanks for the kind words, Finn. Hugs and Kisses is 31" x 32 1/2" - this isn't the best photo of it since it chops off a bit of the borders. Course it's another quilt that is in storage.
I love quilting with perle as well. Not every quilt, but lots of them. It makes a bold statement and you can see the quilting stitches so well.

Ton, this quilt looks awesome! I haven't seen this one before, and I love what you are doing with the red sampler letters too. I wondered if you were going to make something with them! :c) I shouldn't have wondered, I should have KNOWN!

Sorry about the headache...that sucks! I know how that goes and how incapacitating they can be...
